Sudhagad / Bhorapgad is a hill fort situated in Maharashtra, India.

If you’re looking for a weekend getaway from Mumbai or Pune, this is the perfect place to go for a short and sweet trek. The summit is only 620 meters above sea level, so it’s not too strenuous, and the views are totally worth it!

To get to Sudhagad, head towards Khopoli, which is just a bit ahead of Lonavala. From there, you can ask the locals for directions to Pali or just use Google maps.

Now, there are two base villages to start your trek from, Pacchapur (Thakurwadi) and Dhondse. We recommend the Thakurwadi route, which is said to be easier than the Dhondse route. And if you’re a beginner, don’t worry! You can always hire a guide from the base village to help you out. Just make sure you bring plenty of water and snacks in case you get hungry.

As you trek up Sudhagad, you’ll get to see some awesome sights, like the big entrance of the fort, the secret escape route, and the view of surrounding valleys and mountains. And of course, there are some stairs and ruins to explore too. It’s a perfect opportunity to channel your inner Indiana Jones!

The fort was named Bhorapgad after the Goddess Bhoraidevi and has a rich history that dates back to the 2nd century BC. In fact, Shivaji Maharaj considered it to be the capital of the Maratha empire, but he ultimately chose Raigad due to its central location.

Once you reach the top, there are two huge lakes where you can take a dip and even camp out for the night. You can also visit the Bhorai Devi temple and “Pant Sachivancha Vada” to get a real taste of local culture.

But beware, the trek can take a toll on your energy! Make sure you have plenty of snacks and water to keep you going. And don’t be surprised if you feel a little insignificant in front of the surrounding mountains.

When you’re ready to head back down, you can either take the same route or explore an alternate route from Dhondase village. This trail will take you through the Mahadarwaja, and there are diversions to other trails like Talibala, Ghanghad, and Kairgad.

So what are you waiting for? Grab your water bottle, your hiking boots, and your sense of adventure and head to Sudhagad / Bhorapgad for an awesome weekend trek!
