Sumargad, the less-visited fort is in Ratnagiri district. If you’re someone who’s always up for a thrilling adventure, then Sumargad is definitely the place for you.

Located about 19 kilometers from Khed City, this fort lies in the eastern direction of Khed. And guess what? There are no human settlements around the fort! So, it’s just you and nature in all its glory.

Now, you may be wondering how to get there. Well, there are two ways to reach Sumargad. One is from Mahipatgad and the other one is from Rasalgad. And let me tell you, the trek to this fort is not as simple as the Marathi name suggests. Even the greatest historian, G. N. Dandekar, says that you have to climb the cliff on the eastern face of the fort by catch-holding one tree. Yep, you read that right – one tree. So, make sure you’ve got some good arm strength before attempting this trek.

But, trust me, the stunning views and fascinating history of the fort are definitely worth the effort. On reaching the fort-top, you’ll come across two cisterns with a cave carved inside them. And if you venture further to the right of these cisterns, you’ll come across a cistern supported on only one column. From here, one straight way climbs up the hill, while the other stretches around the hill. You’ll also see a cave that has been clogged by rocks and soil, with two rooms inside.

The fort is situated in the middle of a hill range that spans in the North-South direction and runs parallel to the Sahyadris. And, due to its height and tough climb, only experienced mountain trekkers can reach it. The fort has straight rock surfaces on all sides, so be prepared for some rock climbing to reach the summit. But once you get there, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of Sahyadri forts in the east, including Vasota and Makarandgad, and mid Sahyadri or Valati forts of Palgad and Mandangad in the west.

Not much is known about the fort’s past, but villagers say that there used to be a festival held in the memory of Goddess, but after an accident in which two villagers fell off the cliffs while balancing the pole, the festival was shifted to Rasalgad.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab your trekking shoes, get some local guidance and start your adventure to the hidden fort of Ratnagiri district. Just be prepared for a challenging climb, some arm-strength training, and a good sense of humor!
