Ambolgad For is also knwo as Rajapur Fort is in Ambolagad village near Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project in the Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra.
This little fort is located on the bay at the north entrance of the Rajapur river, and it covers an area of a quarter of an acre. It may be small, but it’s mighty, as it was built during the Maratha rule to watch over the Musakaji port and surrounding seas. Unfortunately, the fort surrendered to British forces in 1818, and now it’s mostly in ruins. But don’t let that stop you from exploring this historic site!
You can still see the walls and bastions of the fort, and the view from the top is simply breathtaking. Once you are stepping down from the fort, one can spot a old tree at centre position giving you a cinematic view and a nice photo opp.
And speaking of views, the Padavane Ambolgad Beach is just a stone’s throw away from the fort. It’s clean, it’s beautiful, and it’s perfect for a little R&R. Just remember to bring your sunscreen and your sense of humor, because there’s no shelter on the fort!
But don’t worry, you can always stay at the Gagangiri Maharaj Ashram in the village. Just don’t forget to say hello to the locals, who are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.
