Songir Fort is in Lonavala in Maharashtra!

The Songir Fort stands at about 2500 feet above sea level, giving trekkers a stunning view of Dhak, Bhivgad, and Prabalgad from the top. But getting there is no walk in the park. It takes around two hours to reach the top from the base village, and you’ll need to pass through the Palasdari tunnel to get started.

Once you’re on your way, keep your eyes peeled for the slippery ascents along the trail. And when you finally reach the top, you’ll find two water tanks and remnants of ramparts – perfect for some epic selfies!

But that’s not all. The fort itself has a rich history, dating all the way back to 1370 when it was controlled by Farooqi Sultans. It was later passed into the hands of the Mughals, the Marathas, and finally the British in 1818. The fort played a crucial role in guarding the trade route from Burhanpur to Surat, so you know it’s got some serious street cred.

As for things to see along the way, make sure to check out the nearby Nizampur village, Bhamer Fort, Indave Temple, and Shirud Temple. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can even visit the nearby Karjat Railway Station and try to navigate your way to Palasdari Railway Station. Just be warned, there are no direct trains available from Mumbai or Pune, so you might need to do some serious train-hopping to get there!

And last but not least, keep your eyes peeled for the inscription at the entrance of the fort, which recognizes the bravery of Ugrasen, son of Raja Mansingh. You might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of some of the ancient ruins and pillars along the way.

So if you’re up for a trek that’s both challenging and rewarding, don’t miss the Songir Fort Trek in Lonavala. Just don’t forget to double-check which Songir Fort you’re actually heading to, as there is another Songir Fort in Raigad district too.
