Parola Fort is in Maharashtra.

The fort is massive, covering about 160 to 130 square metres, and is situated on the banks of the Bori River. It was built in the early times to serve as a protection from enemies and still gives visitors a historical experience.

According to records, Parola village came into existence around 260 years ago during the construction of Bhuikot Fort. The commercial importance of Parola village increased with the construction of the fort and it became the biggest trading post in northern Maharashtra during the reign of Peshwa chief Newalkar.

According to historians, the chief of Parola who got himself into some serious trouble when he was accused of aiding Rani Laxmibai in the 1857 rebellion by the British. And later in 1859, the British took over the Parola fort and town. Then, things went downhill fast from there. The Brits were not happy campers and they made their feelings known. They started hanging people left and right, and even ransacked the fort for materials.

However, today, Parola Fort is located in the heart of the city and is surrounded by a bustling market. You’ll have to find your way through the market on foot to reach the fort, but it’s worth it. The fort has double ramparts with gateways and the main fort can be seen in the middle of the fort.

Don’t forget to check out the lake just outside the eastern rampart. Most forts have this type of water structure, but this lake is particularly big. Sadly, it’s not visible from outside due to encroachment and you’ll likely see some plastic garbage floating in it.

If you’re up for a bit of exercise, climb up the steps to the inner rampart to get a great view of Parola village. There’s also a square well near an arch, but be careful not to fall in during the rainy season when it fills with water!

Parola Fort is one of the finest examples of architecture with a huge pool and designed gates. It is located on the bank of the Bori River. Like other forts in Maharashtra, here too are some elements in its architecture like bastions and ramparts, made to protect from invaders eyes. There’s hardly anything to do at the fort but one shouldn’t forget to appreciate its seven entrance doors (‘darwaja’ in Hindi); of which the main Door called as “Delhi Darwaja” is the classiest one.

As per the records, the fort was built in 1727 by Great Rani of Jhansi- Lakshmi Bai’s father. Hence, Parola is believed to be the native of Rani Laxmibai. The fort is vast and measures around 160 to 130 square meters. People come here to live in the historical feel this place gives to them which was built in the early times to serve as a protection from the enemies.
