Karnala Bird Sanctuary is where nature lovers, bird watchers, and hikers come to unwind and explore the wild side of Mumbai!

This sanctuary, located a little away from the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Established in 1968, the sanctuary has grown from a measly 4.45 sq.km to a sprawling 12.11 sq.km. in 2003. Today, it’s a popular weekend getaway, where hikers, picnickers, and bird enthusiasts flock to witness the beauty of flora and fauna. The Karnala Sanctuary is not only a sanctuary but an added historic attraction – the ancient 12th-century Karnala Fort. So, you get to experience history, nature, and adventure all in one place!

As you walk through the sanctuary, you’ll be mesmerized by the colourful butterflies fluttering around. During monsoons, the small ravines bubble over with water, accentuating the beauty of the sanctuary. So, make sure you visit during the rainy season. And if you’re a bird lover, you’re in for a treat – the sanctuary is home to over 222 bird species, and 46 species migrate here during winters. You can spot the Malabar Trogon, Three-toed Kingfisher, Ashy Minivet, Rofous Bellied Eagle, Slaty Legged Crake, and many more elusive birds here.

The sanctuary is also home to various wildlife species. You might spot a wild boar, muntjak, langur, or four-horned antelope while trekking. Who knows, you might even spot a leopard, but don’t worry, it’s rare to see one!

There are two entrances into the sanctuary, and for first-time trekkers, the pathway starting at the water pump house is preferred. Arrow marks on the trees show the way for trekkers to follow the hiking trail. The second entrance deemed the more challenging trek starts from the human-made steps that lead directly into the forest. And if you’re not confident about your trekking skills, you can always hire local youths as guides.

The sanctuary is open from sunrise to sunset, and the entry fee is Rs. 35 per person. You can bring your camera, but it’ll cost you an extra Rs. 100. And if you’re driving, the parking charges are Rs. 25 for two-wheelers and Rs. 100 for light wheelers.

The forest cover is mainly moist deciduous type, with the different kind of trees found here, including the Kulu, kalam, mango, nana, asana, teak, and umber. The forest provides the perfect conditions for a thriving bird and wildlife population. The city enjoys a moderate temperature and humid climate almost throughout the year. Nevertheless, the months of July-August and October-February are considered the best times to visit the place.

A word of caution, though – don’t wait until after 5:00 p.m.; it could be dangerous as there are instances of wild animal attacks. So, make sure you plan your visit accordingly!

In conclusion, the Karnala Bird Sanctuary is a must-visit destination for those who love nature, adventure, and history. So, pack your bags and get ready to experience the wild side of Mumbai!
