Welcome to the Funnel Hill, also known as Karnala Fort! If you’re a history buff or an adventure junkie, this hill fort in Raigad district, just 65 km from Mumbai, is a must-visit. And even if you’re not, don’t worry, because this place has something for everyone.

The Karnala Bird Sanctuary surrounds the fort, making it a great spot to trek and enjoy nature. If you’re feeling lazy, don’t worry, the trek to the top is refreshingly easy (well, at least for those of you in good health). Just make sure you’re wearing appropriate shoes, especially during the monsoon, when things get a little slippery.

Now, if you’re feeling brave and adventurous, there’s a shortcut to the top of the fort that can save you about half an hour. But be warned, this route is steep and not for the faint of heart. So, if you’re not comfortable with trekking, stick to the regular route and take your time.

When you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Prabalgad and Rajmachi forts on the northern side. And don’t miss the 125-foot-tall basalt pillar in the middle of the higher level, known as Pandu’s tower. It used to serve as a watchtower back in the day, but now it’s just a cool sight to see.

If you’re a foodie, you’re in luck because there are some great roadside dhabas near Karnala Fort serving delicious local Maharashtrian-style chicken and mutton. And if you’re a seafood lover, some of them even serve Konkani seafood. And for those who prefer something more mainstream, there are plenty of North Indian and Chinese food places near the fort, including a food court just 3kms away.

When you’re done exploring Karnala Fort, don’t forget to check out the nearby attractions like Ram Mandir, Gaodevi Mandir, Ganesh Mandir, Datta Mandir, and Bot Lake. And if you’re looking for some good eats in Panvel, Hotel Fort View and The Village are just a few of the many options available.

Getting to Karnala Fort is easy. You can take state-run buses from Pen, Alibag, Murud, and other nearby areas that stop at the sanctuary gate. Shared auto-rickshaws from Panvel to surrounding villages are also available. And if you prefer a more private mode of transportation, taxis can be hired from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, or Thane.
