Prabalgad Fort, also known as Kalavantin Durg, is the perfect destination for those who love to challenge themselves and embrace nature’s beauty.

It is located between Matheran and Panvel in Maharashtra, this fort is situated at a staggering height of 2,300 feet in the Western Ghats. But don’t let the height scare you off, because the real challenge is the dangerously steep climb leading up to the fort. The steps are cut into the rock of the hill, making this trek one of the toughest in Maharashtra.

If you’re up for the challenge, be prepared to spend about 3 hours climbing rock-cut stairs through a steep slope. Only experienced trekkers should attempt this trek, but if you make it to the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. You can also explore other forts around Kalavantin Durg, such as Karnala and Irshalgad, which have interesting histories and stories linked to them.

For those who are not fond of trekking, Prabalgad town offers plenty of opportunities to relax and soak in the beauty of nature. Take a walk in the jungle trails around the village or visit nearby sights such as Prabal Fort, Louisa Point, and Pisanarth Temple.

But let’s talk about the real reason you’re here – the breathtaking scenery. During the monsoon season, the mist covers the mountains, and waterfalls emerge from within the lush thickets, making this place even more scenic. However, trekking during the rains can be dangerous, so it’s better to avoid it. The summit offers amazing views of the Konkan area and the surrounding mountain ranges, and the terrain uphill is rocky and steep in some places with zigzag steps carved out of rocks. While ascending the fort, the plateau covered with a crown of mist makes for an awe-inspiring sight.

In short, Prabalgad Fort is not for the faint-hearted, but it’s definitely worth the effort. So, pack your bags, put on your hiking boots, and get ready to touch the clouds and hug the wind!
