Nameri National Park is a national park in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas in the Sonitpur District of Assam.
This national park is just a hop, skip, and a jump (or a 35 km drive) from the charming town of Tezpur. And if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can even trek the 9 km from the nearest village, Chariduar.
But let’s talk about what makes Nameri National Park so special. For starters, it shares its northern boundary with the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary of Arunachal Pradesh, making it part of an area that spans a whopping 1,000 km (620 mi). And Nameri itself? It’s a mere 200 km (120 mi) of pure, unadulterated wilderness.
But don’t let its size fool you, Nameri National Park packs a punch when it comes to wildlife. In fact, it was declared as a Tiger Reserve in 1999-2000 and is the second Tiger reserve in Assam after Manas Tiger Reserve.
It has two core areas: Nameri National Park and Sonai- Rupai Wildlife (Satellite Core of the Nameri Tiger Reserve) that are perfect for spotting the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger, the top predator of Nameri. If you’re lucky, you might also spot a leopard, clouded leopard, or wild dog. And let’s not forget the mega herbivore Asian Elephant that occurs in fairly good numbers within the tiger reserve.
But wait, there’s more! The park is also home to gaur, sambar, hog deer, and barking deer, making it an ideal spot for herbivore enthusiasts.
The one which holds all the lifeline of the reserve is the river Jia-Bhoroli that flows along the southern boundary of the park from northwest to southeast, with the river Bor-Dikorai as a tributary.
So pack your bags, grab your binoculars, and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime at Nameri National Park!
