Orang National Park is a national park in India located on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River in the Darrang and Sonitpur districts of Assam. It covers an area of 79.28 km2 (30.61 sq mi).

Orang has a rich flora and fauna that includes the Great Indian rhinoceros, pygmy hog, Asian elephant, wild water buffalo, and Bengal tiger. It’s the only stronghold of rhinoceroses on the north bank of the Brahmaputra river, so if you’re a rhino-lover, this is the place for you!

But Orang National Park has an interesting past, folks. Up until 1900, it was inhabited by local tribes, but then an epidemic disease hit and the tribes abandoned the area.

In 1919, the British declared it a game reserve and it eventually came under the control of the wild life wing of the State Forest Department to meet the requirements of the Project Tiger. But the name-changing game didn’t stop there, in 1992 it was renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, but it was later changed back due to public pressure. Finally, it was declared as National Park in 1999.

But the real advantage of this park is that it’s part of a larger protected area with a tiger habitat, spanning from Kaziranga to Orang, making it the single largest protected area with a tiger habitation in Assam. And if you’re lucky, you might spot a tiger while traversing the river islands and grasslands that connect the two national parks.

So pack your bags, grab your binoculars and get ready to have a wild time at Orang National Park! Just be sure to watch out for any rogue rhinos, and try not to get too confused by all the name changes.
