East Fort is a popular place near Padmanabhapuram temple in Thiruvananthapuram. It is a buzzing commercial hub over many centuries. According to historians, there were huge metal gates on this entrance to the Eastern side of the Fort. Now it also serves as a central point for state government bus.
The city’s Central railway station, as well as the Central Bus Stand (for long distance buses) are both a few minute walk from East Fort.
As to the fort, it is nothing but an imposing fort arch built during 18th century by King Marthanda Varma. There are many other important gates including Nariadachankotta, Padinjarekotta and Azheekotta. The Ananthavilasam Palace, built by King Vishakam Thirunal in 1880, was constructed in the Baroque and Rococo styles of architecture. the Kuthiramalika and the Navarathri Mandapam are very near the East Fort.
