Built by Malik Shah Ahmed, the first sultan of Nizam Shahi dynasty, in the 15th century and boasts of some unique features like 24 bastions, each holding 8 guns, which made it a militarily and strategically well-built fortress. It was indeed one of the invincible and unconquerable forts of India during medieval times.
No wonder it was the main headquarters of the Ahmednagar Sultanate, and also the reason why it passed through the hands of many great empires like the Mughals, Marathas, and the British.
But that’s not all. This fort has seen some significant moments in Indian history, making it a must-visit for all history buffs. Did you know that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru wrote his celebrated book ‘The Discovery of India’ inside this very fort when he was imprisoned by the British? And, Aurangzeb, one of the greatest emperors of all time, breathed his last inside this famous fort.
Today, the fort is under the administration of the Indian Army, but it’s still open for the general public. The major attraction here is the museum, which was once a jail where many Indian freedom fighters were imprisoned, including Pandit Nehru himself.
