Chandan-Vandan Forts! These twin forts, located just 26 km from Satara, are a must-see for any traveler in the area.

Built in the late 12th century by King Bhoj II of the Shilhara dynasty, these forts have a fascinating history. Shivaji Maharaj himself conquered them in 1673 CE, and they were under Maratha control until 1689 CE when they fell into the hands of the Mughals. But fear not, in 1707 CE the Marathas regained control under Sahu Maharaj. It’s like a game of fort hot potato!

The trek to both forts is easy and can be completed in a day, making it the perfect adventure for all skill levels. And let me tell you, the views from the top are worth the hike. Panoramic views of the surrounding hills, lush greenery, and lovely villages await you.

Once you arrive at Chandan Fort, be sure to check out the entrance gate and its two half-demolished bastions. You can’t miss the giant banyan tree nearby, made up of five separate trees, or the temple of Lord Shiva situated near it. And don’t forget to explore the old mosque on the premises.

On to Vandan Fort! You’ll find two entrance doors, one intact and the other dilapidated, and be sure to look for the Ganesh idol carved on one of the door walls. A rocky trail will lead you to the top, and from there, you’ll be treated to views of nearby villages and a small lake/dam built for irrigation purposes.

Throughout your adventure, keep an eye out for dilapidated structures, ancient temples, and unique stone structures that have remained unchanged for years. And don’t forget to take in the natural beauty around you, with waterfalls flowing down fort walls and into paddy fields.

So grab your hiking boots, a sense of adventure, and get ready to explore the fascinating history and stunning beauty of the Chandan-Vandan Forts. You won’t regret it!
