Ajinkyatara is a fort on one of the seven mountains surrounding the city of Satara in the Sahayadri Mountains of Maharashtra, India.

Let me tell you about this fort that was initially named after Aurangzeb’s son, Ajim. But, the name was changed by a Marathi novelist named Narayan Hari Apte to ‘Ajinkyatara’ which means “The Impregnable Star”. And trust me, this fort is nothing less than a star when it comes to the breathtaking panoramic view it offers.

The fort is protected by 4-meter high thick walls with bastions, which makes it as secure as a bank vault. And, there are not one but two gates that lead to this impregnable fort. The main gate with high buttresses is situated at the northwest corner, and a small gate can be found at the southeast corner.

But wait, that’s not all! There are also numerous water tanks inside the fort for storing water. Plus, if you’re a devotee of Indian deities, then you can visit the temples of Devi Mangalai, Lord Shankar, and Lord Hanuman located on the northeast side of the fort.

Now, let’s talk about the fun stuff! Ajinkyatara fort is not just a historical site, but it’s also a haven for adventure junkies. Trekking, hiking, and mountaineering are some of the many adventurous activities that you can enjoy here. So, if you’re looking for a little bit of adventure in your travels, then Ajinkyatara fort is a must-visit spot for you.

Before you plan your visit, make sure to visit this fort between November to February as it’s the best time to be there. The fort is situated just 5 kilometers away from Satara and 58 kilometers from Mahabaleshwar, making it easily accessible by any private vehicle. And if you’re wondering how to get there, don’t worry! There are many ways to reach the fort, and you can even ask the locals for directions.
