Vijaygad Fort is a fort located 60 km from Chiplun, in Ratnagiri district, of Maharashtra.

This fort is located north of the Jaigad Fort on the northern bank of Shastri river creek.

Let’s start with the basics – this fort is small, about an acre in area, with walls that were found to be in ruins in 1862. There was only one gun, no garrison, and no water. It’s safe to say it wasn’t exactly a luxurious place to live, but it has a certain charm to it.

As you make your way from Hedvi to Tawasal village, keep an eye out for the imposing tower of Vijayagad fort on the right side. It’s hard to miss with its saffron flags waving proudly. Climb the tower and enjoy the view of Jaigad Bay, the sea, and the Jaigad fort. The fort and its fortifications are built in purple stone, which is pretty cool.

After descending from the tower, take a stroll through the ruins of the entrance, where you’ll find devyas (which are, in fact, not deviled eggs). Then explore the spacious squares of ruined buildings and admire the descending ramparts on two sides, as well as horizontal ramparts at regular intervals.

But wait, there’s more! Walk along the embankment to the left, and you’ll come to the outer side of the embankment where you can see the Tawasal coast. You might even spot a square enclosure designed like a pond, which could be storing water. Or maybe it’s just a pond, who knows? Let your imagination run wild.

Feeling adventurous? Follow the slippery path that descends from the thick bush, but don’t say we didn’t warn you. The thicket becomes thick, and there’s no way forward. You’ll have to climb back up to the tower, where your tour of the fort will come to an end.

All in all, Vijaygad Fort is a great spot to explore if you’re in the Ratnagiri district. It may be small and a bit rough around the edges, but that’s part of its charm.
