Anjanvel Fort also known as Gopalgad Fort is located 51 km from Chiplun, in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra.
This fort is a real gem in the crown of Konkan, located at Anjanvel village in Ratnagiri district. It’s just a stone’s throw away from Guhagar (14 km) and a short drive from Ganpatipule (90 km). So, if you’re in the mood for some historical exploration, Gopalgad is the place to be!
Built by Siddisad, a sardar of Bijapur rulers in the 16th century, this fort has seen some serious action. It was captured by Shivaji Maharaj in 1660 CE and then, in 1699 CE, it was taken over by Khairatkhan, a Siddi ruler who ruled from Murud Janjira.
But wait, there’s more! Then, Tulaji Angre won the fort in 1744 CE and then lost it to Peshwas in 1755 CE. During the Peshwa rule, the fort became a hub for shipbuilding and cloth weaving. It was the place to be for anyone interested in the textile industry.
Nowadays, though the fort is in ruins, it still holds its charm. The fort walls, which are made up of 12 burujs, were built to withstand attacks. It has two main entrance gates on the eastern and western sides, and you can still see the cannon balls scattered around. There’s even a well at the center of the fort, surrounded by the remnants of an erstwhile palace.
Vehicles can go till the main entrance of the fort, but the real adventure begins when you start climbing up the fort walls.
From the top of the walls, you can get a stunning view of the creek and Dabhol port. It’s like having your own personal balcony with an ocean view. And if you’re up for a climb, the Anjanvel Lighthouse, about 2 km from the fort, is a must-visit spot. This lighthouse was rebuilt in the 1960s and is perched on a steep hillock. It may not be very tall (only 30 feet), but the view from the top is absolutely magnificent. Plus, just outside the lighthouse, there’s a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, called the Tolekeshwar Temple. It’s the perfect place to relax and take in the beautiful sea breeze.
In conclusion, Anjanvel or Gopalgad Fort is a real treasure trove of history and adventure.
