Welcome to Suvarnadurga, the Golden Fort that shines like a jewel between Mumbai and Goa. If you’re looking for a place to hide from your boss, family or simply just the stress of everyday life, Suvarnadurga is the perfect spot. This fort is located on a small island in the Arabian Sea, and it’s the pride of Marathas, who created this masterpiece as a counter to enemy attacks, especially by those pesky Europeans.

If you’re a fan of history, then you’ll be thrilled to know that the fort was built by the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who founded the Maratha Empire. But he wasn’t the only one to leave his mark on this magnificent structure. The fort was fortified by other Peshwas and the Angres for defense purposes. It even had a shipbuilding facility, which is pretty impressive for the 1660s.

The literal meaning of Suvarnadurga in Marathi is “Golden Fort,” and once you see it, you’ll understand why. The fort is a protected monument, and the best way to reach it is by boat from the Harnai port on the headland. When you arrive, you’ll see a small wall and a broken door overlooking the sea at a distance of 100 meters from the main entrance. Don’t worry, it’s not a sign of danger, it’s just a part of the fort’s charm.

As you explore further, you’ll come across big bastions that are 30 feet high and look like they’re guarding the fort like fierce warriors. You can even climb to the top and take in the beautiful views of the surrounding area. There are sculptures carved on the doors, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can explore the secret door that’s 4 feet tall. Who knows what you might find beyond it? Just be sure to watch your step, as the vegetation can get pretty thick.

The fort is located in 8 acres of area at a distance of 250 meters from the coast of Harne, and you can reach it in just 30 minutes from the Harne harbor in a boat. If you’re planning on visiting, we suggest coming after the monsoon season, probably in January, as it’s easier to roam around with less vegetation on the floor.

Lastly, we can’t forget to mention that Suvarnadurga was the birthplace of Kanhoji Aangre, who was one of the most prominent leaders to receive the honorary ‘Sarkhel’ title from Chattrapati Rajaram. The fort has been through a lot over the years, from being under the rule of Adilshahi to being won by the Marathas and eventually falling into the hands of the British. But through it all, Suvarnadurga has remained a shining example of India’s rich history.

So come on over, and explore this majestic fortress for yourself. Who knows, you might even find some hidden treasure along the way. Just don’t tell the British.
