Lingana Fort is in the Mahad Taluka of Raigad district in Maharashtra.

With a height of 2969 feet and an ascent of four miles, the Lingana Fort takes its name from its unique shape, which resembles a linga. But don’t let its breathtaking beauty fool you, folks. This fort is a tough nut to crack! The first half of the climb is easy, but the second half will have you huffing and puffing.

The fort’s rock-cut steps have been destroyed, and it’s almost impossible to reach the top. But that shouldn’t stop you from trying, right? At the top of this magnificent fortress, you’ll find a 2500 square feet area with no fortifications or buildings left, but you’ll still discover some cisterns and traces of a grain store.

To get to the Lingana Fort, you’ll have to reach Mahad City first. And don’t worry, state transport buses ply regularly from Kalyan, Thane, Mumbai, and Pune to Mahad. You can also hop on the passenger train from Diva Station at 6:00 am. From Mahad bus depot, two buses go to the village of Paane, which is at the base of the fort.

From the village of Paane, you’ll need to walk for an hour on a slippery path to reach the base of the pinnacle. If you’re coming from Rajgad or Torna to Raigad, you’ll pass through the valley called Borhatyachi Naal, which lies between the mountain of Lingana and the mountain of Raylingi.

The history of Lingana Fort is not as glorious as the important ones, but it still has some fascinating tales. According to the treaty of Purandar, Raigad and Lingana were retained by Shivaji Maharaj after he defeated Chandrarao More. The goddesses worshipped here were Shree Janani and Somjai, and the fort was maintained along with Raigad. But in 1818, the British captured the fort and destroyed it so that no one could capture it back and stay on it.

Today, Lingana Fort is a haven for rock-climbers and adventure enthusiasts. But its history deserves to be revealed to more and more people. So why not pack your bags, put on your adventure hat, and head out to Lingana Fort for an experience of a lifetime?
