Raigad Fort is one of the strongest fort in Maharashtra,
Standing tall at around 820 metres on the Sahyadri mountain range in Mahad, the Raigad Fort is a sight to watch. The only way to access it is through a pathway with a whopping 1737 steps, but don’t worry if you’re not up for the trek. There’s also a ropeway that takes you to the top in just 4 minutes.
But this isn’t just any ordinary tourist spot – it’s a sacred place of pilgrimage with a rich history of bravery and audacity. The Marathas take great pride in the fort, which was once the capital of their kingdom. In fact, the Britishers named it the Gibraltar of the East, which is pretty impressive if you ask us.
Once you’re at the top, take a look at the impressive gates like the Nagarkhana Darwaja, Mena Darwaja, Maha Darwaja, and Palkhi Darwaja.
For those who prefer a more relaxed journey to the top, the ropeway price includes a visit to the museum and a film show. And the prices are pretty reasonable too! Two-way tickets for adults cost INR 285, children (between 3 to 4 feet tall) cost INR 190, and senior citizens over 60 years old (with photo ID proof) cost INR 190 as well.
While most parts of the fort are now in ruins, there’s still plenty to see and explore. Check out the queen’s quarters with their six chambers (each with one restroom), or the ruins of the watchtowers, citadel, and durbar hall. And let’s not forget about the Ganga Sagar Lake flowing right in front of the fort.
If you’re feeling brave, you can also take a peek at the execution point called Takmak Tok, where prisoners were thrown to their deaths. And for a dose of humor, there’s even a replica of the original throne inside the fort – perfect for channeling your inner royalty.
So what are you waiting for? Add the Raigad Fort to your travel list for a trip filled with history, bravery, and a few laughs along the way.
