Purnagad Fort is a fort located 25 km from Ratnagiri, in Ratnagiri district, of Maharashtra.

Built in 1724, this fort is like a time capsule that takes you back to the Maratha era. And let me tell you, the journey to reach this fort is not for the faint-hearted. The main entrance is so hidden that you’ll feel like a detective on a mission. But don’t worry, the Hanuman temple near the fort will guide you to your destination.

Now, let’s talk about the main door, aka the Mahadarwaja. It’s a strong, fine structure made out of lateritic stone that has images of the Sun, Moon, and Lord Ganesh engraved in the middle. Then, there is Devadi, which is a fancy name for the cabin once you enter through the door. It’s like stepping into a time machine that takes you back to the Maratha era.

The fort is situated on a mountain at the confluence of Muchkundi creek and the Arabian Sea. Some say that it was constructed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, while others believe it was Sakhoji Aangre, son of Kanhoji Angre who built it. Regardless of who built it, it’s clear that it’s one of the popular forts of Konkan and also one of the best places to visit in Ratnagiri.

Lets explore more! The fort, which spread over 22 acres and has not one, but two entrance gates. One facing east and the other facing west.

But the real adventure begins once you enter the fort. There are staircases from four sides that lead you to the top of the fort. And even though the fort is covered in thick vegetation and overgrown trees, it’s still in good condition. The main entrance door and its buruj, boundary wall are still standing tall. And the view from the top is worth all the effort. You’ll be mesmerized by the vast seascape and the creek of the Muchkundi River. It’s like nature decided to put on a show just for you.

And if you’re not satisfied with the view from the top, then take a walk to the Gawkhadi seashore which is south of the fort. The seashore is engulfed in dense Casuarina trees that will make you feel like you’re walking in a forest. And the view from the fortified top of the fort is just breathtaking.

In conclusion, if you want to explore a place that’s full of history, adventure, and scenic beauty, then Purnagad Fort is the place for you.
