Shashur or Sashur Monastery is a Buddhist monastery in Lahaul and Spiti, Himachal Pradesh
This beautiful three-storey structure, located just 35-40 km from Manali, is a true testament to the rich Buddhist culture of the Drugpa Sect.
As you might have guessed from its name, Shashur Monastery is surrounded by beautiful blue pine trees, providing a peaceful and serene atmosphere.
The view from the top of this 600 m tall structure is nothing short of breathtaking, with the panoramic view of the river, mountains, and Keylong town leaving me in awe.
The 17th-century Shashur Monastery is built following the Mandala concept, with four gates surrounding a central circle. The prayer rooms are adorned with stunning Thangka paintings and wall paintings, making the visit to this place worth every penny.
If you’re planning a trip to Shashur Monastery, the best time to visit is in July, during the annual Chham dance festival. Trust me, the bedazzling interiors and architecture of this place will leave you in awe.
Just be prepared for a little bit of physical exertion, as the climb up to the monastery can be quite challenging, especially if you’re not used to small climbs at high altitudes. But the peace and tranquility you’ll experience once you reach the top will be worth every step.
The 3.5-hour trek from Keylong ISBT bus stand was easy, with stunning views of the valley and surrounding mountains. The road to the monastery was narrow at times, making the drive a bit difficult, especially if you’re traveling in a minivan with 7 people.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for a unique and serene travel experience, Shashur Monastery is a must-visit. The peace, tranquility, and stunning views of this hidden gem are worth every step of the journey. So pack your bags and get ready to discover the land of the blue pines!
