Shalimar Bagh is in Srinagar in Kashmir.
This Mughal garden is a timeless beauty, with a rich history dating back to the 2nd century. The garden was named after an ancient cottage named Shalimar, meaning ‘abode of love’, which was built by Pravarsena II, the founder of Srinagar.
Fast forward to the 17th century, when Emperor Jahangir built the celebrated Shalimar Bagh as a tribute to his beloved wife Nur Jahan. The royal couple was so enamoured with Kashmir that they would travel from Delhi to Srinagar 13 times in the summer, with their full-court entourage in tow, to make the garden their imperial summer residence.
The garden has gone through several expansions and renovations over the years, but its Persian Garden layout of three terraces, each comprised of a water fountain and pool, remains a hallmark of Mughal horticulture.
With 410 fountains and 31 acres of land, it’s easy to get lost in the beauty of this magnificent garden.
The garden is divided into two sections – the private Diwan-e-Khas and the public Diwan-e-Aam, each leading to its own unique area.
The third terrace, the Zenana Garden, features two pavilions in the Kashmiri style. And let’s not forget about the Chini Khanas, the arched niches that once provided a magical amber hue to the gardens at night.
The best time to visit is from April to October, from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, or from November to March, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Plan to spend 1-2 hours marveling at this beauty, and don’t forget to bring INR 10 per head for entry.
Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a peaceful escape, Shalimar Bagh is a must-visit for any traveler to Srinagar.”
