Matho Monastery is in Ladakh.

Nestled in the heart of the stunning Zanskar Range, Matho Monastery (also known as Matho Gompa) or Mangtro Monastery) is a hidden gem that offers a unique glimpse into the world of Tibetan Buddhism.

Located 26 km southeast of Leh and right along the banks of the Indus River, this remote monastery is known for its annual Oracle Matho Nagrang Festival.

This is an exciting event that takes place on the 14th and 15th days of the first month of the Tibetan calendar and is attended by villagers from all over the region. During the festival, two oracles, known as “Rongtsan,” are said to inhabit the bodies of two monks for a few hours. These oracles are chosen by the monastery’s protector every three years, and their purpose is to predict the fortunes of the local communities for the coming year.

Matho Monastery is also home to a collection of stunning thangka murals, some of which date back to the 14th century. The wall murals and artifacts here are truly a work of art and a must-see for anyone visiting Ladakh. The friendly monks are always on hand to help visitors climb the steep steps and answer any questions.

The main temple houses a gorgeous statue of the Maitreya Buddha, which is considered one of the most beautiful in all of Ladakh.

The frescoes here are bright and large, and visitors are welcome to take photos (just remember to turn off your flash!). The museum, which has a rich and vast collection, is a must-visit and is worth at least 30 minutes of your time. And the views of the snow-capped mountains from the monastery are simply breathtaking.

So, if you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable travel experience, head to Matho Monastery and discover the serenity and beauty of this remote and tranquil corner of the world.
