Leh Palace is a major attraction in Leh town in Ladakh.

The palace is a historic gem perched atop is the former royal palace. It was built in the 1600s by the legendary Sengge Namgyal and is modeled after the iconic Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet.

Although time and war have left their mark on this beautiful structure, the Leh Palace still stands tall and proud, showcasing its rich history and ancient Buddha relics.

Step inside this magnificent palace and be transported back in time, surrounded by walls adorned with 450-year-old paintings and artefacts once used by the royal family.

On special occasions like the Galdam Namchot festival, the palace comes alive with lights, creating a truly magical atmosphere.

The palace is now under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India, who are working tirelessly to restore this piece of history and keep the legacy of the Namgyal dynasty alive. Nine storeys high, the palace once housed the royal family on its upper floors, while the lower floors were used for stables and storage.

Today, visitors can explore the Palace Museum, where a rich collection of jewellery, ceremonial dresses, and crowns are on display. Don’t miss the opportunity to admire the 450-year-old Tibetan thangka paintings with their intricate designs, made from crushed gems and stones.

Climb to the roof of the palace for panoramic views of Leh and its surroundings. This viewpoint is especially popular for photos, especially with the statue of the snow leopard in the background. Although the palace’s narrow and squeaky wooden stairs may be a challenge, each floor is unique and offers a different piece of history to discover.

So, pack your bags and head to Leh for an adventure back in time. Don’t miss the chance to visit this majestic palace and soak in all its history and beauty.
