Ramnagar Fort is in Jammu in India.

The fort and the town is nestled in the picturesque mid Himalayan range. Just a quick 40km jaunt west of Udhampur, this little gem served as the capital of the old Bandarlta State.

But the real star of the show here is the Ramnagar Fort, built by none other than Raja Suchet Singh during his reign. Legend has it that the Raja even met his untimely demise within the fortress walls, and his devoted wife even performed the ancient tradition of sati nearby. Today, visitors can pay their respects at the Samadhi of Maharani, a monument erected in her honor.

But don’t let the fort’s age fool you, the Archaeological Survey of India gave it a little sprucing up in 1972 and it’s now a protected monument under their watchful eye. The fort is a square on plan with those fancy polygonal bastions on each corner, and stands tall with three stories. Inside, you’ll find cells and vaulted loads where they used to store those big ol’ gun balls. And if you’re a fan of Hindu deities, you’re in luck because the entranceway is adorned with pictures of Ganesha, Durga, and Hanuman.

But the fun doesn’t stop there, there’s plenty more to explore within the Ramnagar fortress. Take a stroll through the Purana Mahal (Old Palace), marvel at the opulence of the Nawa Mahal (New Palace), and gawk at the intricate details of the Sheesh Mahal. And don’t forget to pay your respects at the Samadhi of Queen of Raja Suchet Singh. All in all, Ramnagar is a destination that will transport you to a different time and immerse you in rich history and culture.
