Jasmergarh Fort or Hirenagar Fort is in Kathua in Kashmir.
Jasmergarh Fort, a historic gem nestled atop a hill in the Jasrota region. This fort, built by the mighty Hira Singh, ruler of a vast land that included not just Jasrota but also Basoli, Bilawar, and even Lakhanpur. And let’s not forget, he also had a hand in creating the town of Hiranagar, named after himself, in the vicinity of the fort.
As you make your way to the fort, be sure to approach from the south and take in the grand gateway that leads you to the main rampart wall, also known as the Faseel. And let’s not forget the bastions, Kali temple, and the two fully grown peepal trees that add to the fort’s architectural charm. But the real hidden gem of the fort has got to be the well, or baoli, located on the northern periphery surrounded by lush vegetation.
And for those of you history buffs, the fort also houses a jail complex with two symmetrical blocks located opposite each other. So pack a picnic and head on over for a day of exploring and learning about the rich history of this incredible place. Just make sure to check with tourism operators before visiting as access to the fort may be limited.
