Narayangad is a small fort located near Narayangaon in Junnar Taluka. Don’t let its size fool you, as it’s home to ancient caves, water tanks, and even has a fascinating history dating back to the Satvahana era.

Legend has it that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj himself lived on this fort. And let’s be honest, if it was good enough for Shivaji, it’s good enough for us! From the north of Khodad village, you can spot Narayangad’s two peaks standing out proudly in the distance. And if you’re wondering why there’s a settlement called Gadachiwadi nearby, it’s probably because the fort is situated next to it.

To get to the fort, you can take a beautiful trail leading up from behind the Mukai temple, where you’ll be welcomed by Bori and Acacia trees. And don’t worry, recent stone steps have been installed to make the climb easier. Trust us, you’ll need them!

As you make your way up, you’ll notice the lack of vegetation on the fort, but don’t be discouraged. The natural cliff on all four sides makes up for it, and you’ll even spot remains of towers and fortifications. .

Once you reach the top, get ready to be blown away by the breathtaking views. From the Ashtavinayakas in the distance to the misty fringes of the Lake of Ozar, everything looks spectacular. And of course, you can’t miss Shivneri rising from the fog and the telescopes of Khoddgaon and GMRT in the south. It’s like a scene straight out of a movie!

If you’re up for a little adventure, take the trail that turns into the forest on the right-hand side. You’ll come across some remains, like a quarter, and a beautiful tank dug in earlier times. And if you’re feeling thirsty, the Narayan tank is just a stone’s throw away.

As you explore the fort, keep an eye out for the Hastebai temple, which is situated on the highest peak. The idol of the goddess is armed and is quite a sight to watch! And if you happen to visit during Nagpanchami or Dussehra, you’re in for a treat as a large Hastebai fair is held at the fort.

But the real fun begins when you start searching for the remains of the fort hidden in the grass. It’s like a treasure hunt, and who knows, you might even discover something new!

As you leave the fort and make your way back, take a moment to appreciate the history and beauty that surrounds Narayangad.
