Madangad is a fort in the Nashik region of Maharashtra, India in the Kalsubai range.
Unlike other forts in the area, Madangad boasts a relatively small and tilted plateau at the top, but don’t be fooled – this trek is not for the faint of heart!
The best time to visit is in December and January,. One can start from Ambewadi or Samrad villages, where you can hire a local guide for Rs. 1500/ per 10 persons to manage all necessary equipment for ascending and descending.
And once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Alang, Kalasubai, Aundha Fort, Patta and Bitangad are to the east, Harihar, Trymbakgad and Anjaneri to the north, Harishchandragad, Aajobagad, Khutta (pinnacle), Ratangad and Katrabai to the south, and Kulang to the west. It’s like a 360-degree tour of the best of Maharashtra’s mountain ranges!
But before you get too excited, Madangad is one of the most difficult fortresses in Sahyadri, and the trek is not for the faint of heart. The climb involves a steep rock patch, which might take 30 minutes to an hour to set up ropes and get the whole group up. But once you’re up there, it’s a thrilling experience that you won’t forget anytime soon!
And if you thought the ascent was tough, the descent is just as challenging. The small and uneven steps can be treacherous, especially if you’re carrying a big backpack. But hey, isn’t that what adventure is all about?
If you’re feeling up for more, you can also visit Alang and Kulang, which are located in the same region and are easily visible from Madangad.
But wait, there’s more! Madangad also boasts two water cisterns and a cave that can accommodate between 20 and 30 people. Just make sure to visit before February, when the water runs out.
So what are you waiting for? Grab your backpack, lace up your hiking boots, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime at Madangad!
