Malang gad is a hill fort located in the Matheran Hill Range, Thane District, Maharashtra.

First things first, climbing up to the second stage of Malanggarh (up to Machi) is a piece of cake. No need for fancy trekking equipment, but if you want to take it to the next level, you better have the right gear and technique. Trust me; you don’t want to be that person who gets stuck halfway and needs a rescue team.

Now, let’s dive into the history of Malanggad Fort. Back in the day, in the sixth century AD, a king named Naldev Maurya ruled this place. Fast forward to the seventeenth century, and several thrilling battle took place between the Marathas and the British at this fort.

Malanggarh is divided into three phases. At the first stage, you’ll find the Samadhi Temple (Haji Malang) at Malanggad, which used to be the fort’s loft. This machi is known as “Peer Machi.” At the second stage are the ruins of “Son Machi” and Puratan. While the third difficult stage is the “Balekilla,” which also has ancient ruins.

If you’re up for the challenge, take the well-maintained flight of steps up to the Samadhi Temple. From there, you’ll find a path that leads up the hill through a lane between two shops on the right side of the Samadhi Temple. As the trail climbs up, there is a small plateau. Two paths split from here. A flight of stairs leads up to another loft, while the path on the right side leads to a cave below the cut wall. There is a water tank at this place. After seeing this cave, come back to the level, wait for the stairs, and start climbing. In about 20 minutes, by way of these more or less high built steps, you’ll reach the second floor of the fort through the ruined entrance, where the two towers are intact.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab your gear, prepare for an adventure, and experience the historical Malanggad Fort.
