Makarandgad Fort is located near the famous Pratapgad in Maharashtra.

Getting to Madhu Makarandgad may require some ninja skills as the dense spread of Javali trees make it seem almost impossible to conquer. But fear not, our beloved ruler Shivaji Maharaj did it and now we can too!

There are two paths to reach the Ghonaspur village, one through Chaturbet and the other through Haathlot. Both paths lead to the Mallikarjun temple of Ghonaspur where you can find some worn-out stone inscriptions depicting the sacrifices of brave warriors in battle (Veergali) and their wives who selflessly sacrificed their lives on the pyre of their brave husbands (Saati haat).

From the temple, there’s a steep climb of about 15 minutes along the hill edge, and voila! You’ll reach the decrepit doorway of the entrance to the fort. The doorway is naturally protected as it’s carved in stone, so it’s perfect for those who are looking for some natural protection from the elements.

Now, for the real adventure! There are two paths to explore the fort. The first one leads to the summit, where you’ll find the Mallikarjun temple with a statue of Nandi just outside, and a dilapidated square structure in front. The second path circles around the fort hill and leads to the back of the fort where you’ll find a dusty and much-traversed path to descend.

As you descend, keep an eye out for the unique rock with a tunnel or hole formed due to weathering from wind and rain. It’s definitely an Instagram-worthy spot! Once you reach the entry doorway, take the path on the right, which leads to a dried-up water tank.

If you continue walking left alongside the edge of the mountain, you’ll find a path leading to Madhugad, where you can find a large water tank and enjoy an even more challenging trek.

But wait, there’s more! The trek to Madhu Makarandgad is an easy-moderate trek that you can complete within a few hours. The trail runs through a thick forest canopy, making it ideal in any season, including summer. Plus, you’ll get beautiful views of Mahabaleshwar and the Koyna river from the summit.

So, pack your bags, bring at least 2-3 liters of water, and don’t forget your trekking safety equipment and ropes. And remember, when in doubt, just follow the dusty path! Happy trekking, fellow adventurers!
