Mahim Fort is in the metro of Mumbai. It is a leftover relice from the British Raj that has seen its fair share of battles and now, sadly, is in a state of disrepair.
Located in Mahim Bay, the fort offers stunning views of Worli, Bandra, and Mahim. Its origins are shrouded in mystery, but one thing is for sure – it has been fiercely contested throughout history.
From Portuguese attacks to British defenses, this fort has seen it all!
In 1772, the Portuguese attempted to take over the fort, but they were met with the full force of the British army, complete with cannonballs and thunder. Even the Mount Mary’s Basilica suffered damage during this encounter. According to historical records, there were 100 soldiers and 30 cannons defending the fort at the time – talk about a fierce battle!
Despite its glorious past, the Mahim Fort has fallen victim to administrative neglect and encroachment of slums. In fact, today it’s likely that all you’ll find are encroachers and hutments in the area. It’s a shame that such an important heritage site has been allowed to run to seed.
But fear not, intrepid travelers, there’s hope on the horizon! The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has recognized the importance of the Mahim Fort and has proposed to pay special attention. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this will become a reality and this historic gem will be given the status it deserves.
So come on, let’s pay a visit to the Mahim Fort and witness the battle scars of Mumbai’s past. And who knows, maybe we’ll be able to witness its glorious restoration in the future!
