Are you ready for a dose of culture and history in Mumbai? Look for Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum!
This museum is a joint venture between the Municipal Corporation Greater Mumbai, the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation, and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage.
Originally opened as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Bombay in 1872, this museum is the first of its kind in Mumbai and showcases the city’s cultural heritage and history through a stunning collection of fine and decorative arts.
The permanent collection includes everything from miniature clay models to rare books, documenting life in Mumbai from the late 18th to early 20th centuries.
But it’s not just the collection that’s impressive. The museum underwent a massive five-year restoration project, earning UNESCO’s Award of Excellence in Cultural Conservation in 2005.
And after reopening in 2008, the museum has been committed to showcasing contemporary art and culture, collaborating with museums and cultural institutions from around the world.
And if that’s not enough to pique your interest, the Museum Plaza offers a space for performances, outdoor activities, and workshops, while the Special Projects Space, Museum Cafe, and Museum Shop provide even more ways to engage with the museum.
But the museum isn’t done expanding yet – with the support of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and private donors, a new wing is in the works. This expansion will include a Mumbai Modern Gallery, a state-of-the-art Special Exhibitions Gallery, an auditorium, a learning center, a conservation center, and even staff and visitor amenities like cafes and shops.
So, whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a fun way to spend a weekend, the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum is the perfect destination. And the best part? They even offer free tours on the weekends! So go on, get cultured – your Instagram followers will thank you.
