Mandore Fort /Garden or The Ravana Temple is located just 9 km from the bustling city of Jodhpur.
This suburb historical town holds a unique place in the hearts of the locals. Believed to be the birthplace of Ravana’s wife Mandodari, Mandore was once the ancient capital of Marwar and has been given several names throughout its history, including Maddodara, Mandowar, and Mandavyapura-durga.
With a rich heritage dating back to the fourth century, this town has been held by several dynasties including the Nagas, Pratiharas, Chahamanas, and even Muslim Sultans of Delhi. Excavations carried out in the early 20th century revealed two elaborately carved monoliths of Krishna-lila scenes that could be dated to the early fifth century. The Pratihara rulers of Mandore also constructed magnificent Brahmanical and Jaina temples, one of which was consecrated to Vishnu and is still standing today.
Step back in time and explore the remnants of this once grand fort, including the rampart constructed by the Pratihara ruler Rajilla in the sixth century. The fort also houses a museum that showcases the art, culture, and tradition of the area from the 8th to 20th centuries. Just be careful of the mischievous monkeys!
