Agra Fort is a historical fort in the city of Agra in India.

This is a true testament to the grandeur of Mughal architecture and design. Built by Emperor Akbar in 1573, this architectural masterpiece sits on the right bank of the River Yamuna, entirely constructed out of red sandstone.

As you enter the fort through the Amar Singh Gate, be prepared to be transported back in time to the era of the Mughals. The fort was once the residence of the Mughal emperors until 1638, and it’s easy to see why. The fort is so massive that it’s often referred to as a walled city.

Take a stroll through the fort’s premises and discover some of the most exquisite structures, such as the Pearl Mosque, Diwan-i I Khas, Diwan-i I Aam, Moti Masjid and Jahangiri Mahal. And don’t miss the mind-stirring view of the Yamuna River and the Taj Mahal from the fort’s pavilions.

But the Red Fort of Agra is not just a feast for the eyes, it also has a rich history. Before its capture by the British, the last Indian rulers to have occupied it were the Marathas after the Mughals. In 1983, the Agra Fort was life inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

And let’s not forget the beautiful Taj Mahal, located just 2.5 km northwest of the fort.

However, it’s not all just history and beauty at the Red Fort of Agra. The fort was also the site of a battle during the Indian rebellion of 1857, which caused the end of the British East India Company’s rule in India and led to a century of direct rule of India by Britain.

So, pack your bags and set off on an adventure to discover the rich history and stunning architecture of the Red Fort of Agra. And don’t forget to carry your identity cards and hire only approved guides and photographers with identity cards. The fort is open from 6.00 AM to 6.00 PM, and it’ll take you about 2-3 hours to explore it. The entry fee for Indians is INR 40 and for foreigners is INR 550. Entry for children below 15 years is free. Food items, liquor, tobacco, headphones, knives, wire, mobile charger, electronic goods (except camera) are prohibited, and mobile phones are to be kept switched off.
