Shahpur Fort is another ruined fort in northern Karnataka. The fort is believed to be built by Venkatappa Nayaka. According to historians and legends, the town Shahapur is known as Sagara Nadu, going back to early Ramayana period, where King Bhagirath peformed penance and brought Ganga here.
It is a wonderful place to trek and explore. The fort much of it is in ruins, but one can see the seven canons, fortifications, prison chambers, gateways etc. If you can spare few hours, it will be a thrilling adventure to explore it in details. One can also spot some wild animals like mongoose, wild boars, snakes here.
