Taragarh Fort – is a magnificent and spellbinding piece of history situated in the beautiful city of Bundi. Built in the year 1354, this “Star Fort” is a true representation of what Bundi was all about during its golden era.
Perched high on a hilltop, the fort offers a panoramic view of the entire city and is nothing short of a fairy tale come to life. The famous author Rudyard Kipling once described it as “more the work of Goblins than of men”, and we can see why!
As you approach the fort, be prepared to be transported back in time with three massive gateways that mark the entrance to the fort. These gateways, known as Lakshmi Pol, Phuta Darwaza, and Gagudi ki Phatak, are beautifully engraved with carvings of elephants.
Venture inside and you’ll come across a network of tunnels that once played a critical role in securing the king and his entourage during times of war. Unfortunately, tourists are not allowed to explore the tunnels, but the battlements and ramparts more than make up for it. The largest bastion in the fort is the 16th-century Bhim Burj, where the giant cannon Garbh Gunjan or the “Thunder from the Womb” was once mounted.
If you’re in the mood for a royal experience, then you must visit the Rani Mahal. This palace, built exclusively for the wives and concubines of the rulers, still holds its charm with its stained glass windows and murals. It also houses the famous Miran Saheb ki Dargah in its complex.
