Ratnadurga fort was built in the 12th century, this fort is a perfect blend of culture and architecture. You can sport this fort, as a giant structure near the Ratnagiri docks, spread over 120 acres of land.

This fort is surrounded by the Arabian sea from three sides and a lighthouse on the fourth, making the scene look like a picture-perfect postcard. This fort was once a stronghold of the Maratha empire and later occupied by the Mughals. It has seen it all – from battles to romantic sunsets, and it’s still standing tall and strong.

Climbing the fort is a piece of cake, and it leads directly to the Goddess Bhagawati temple, where you’ll find a perfect spot to rest your weary feet. The temple area is the largest area on the fort, and every day the temple is open from 8 am to 6 pm. But wait, that’s not all! A downwards path on the right-hand side of the fort leads through the fisherfolk’s hutments to the Bhagawati port, and a road on the left side leads to the lighthouse. You can also find the tomb of Ratnagiri Baba in a dome on the left side of this road, and the name Ratnadurga must have originated from here itself.

If you’re a history buff, the fort’s bastions will thrill you. The small fort has 9 bastions, whereas the entire fort has a total of 29 bastions, and in a bastion besides the lighthouse, four cannons are placed out of which 2 canons are almost 4 feet long, whereas the other 2 canons are almost 12 feet long. This fort has acted as the protector of Ratnagiri region and has witnessed many historical events through centuries. It’s like meeting an elderly savvy person, and you’ll feel enriched by their stories.

Ratnadurga fort gives you a splendid view of the sunset and Arabian sea, with the shore waves screeching in your ears making it a memorable trip far from the city hustle. It’s no wonder that the fort is equally famous for its scenic beauty and charming surroundings that can be seen from the top. So, pack your bags, grab a camera, and head over to Ratnadurga fort for an unforgettable adventure.

This fort was built during the Bahamani period. In 1670 Maratha King Shivaji won the fort from the hands of Adil Shah of Bijapur. King Shivaji had built protecting towers on two commanding points, one at the south and the other near the old court house. The Citadel defense was improved by maratha Koli admiral Kanhoji Angre in 1750–1755. Dhondu Bhaskar Pratinidhi did some minor repairs to the fort during Peshwa regime (1755–1818). The fort was later won by the British in 1818. The temple of Bhagavati was renovated in 1950.
