Kanpur Sangrahalaya is a museum in Mall Road in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh.
If you are interested in going down memory lane, Buckle up, because we’re headed to Kanpur, India, the industrial hub of Uttar Pradesh, where history and hilarity collide at the Kanpur Museum.
Once upon a time, the British decided to build the King Edward Memorial Hall in honor of King Edward VII. But let’s be real, they just wanted a fancy shindig spot for European-style ballroom dancing. And who can blame them? Even European merchants settled in Cawnpore (now known as Kanpur) needed a little amusement in their lives.
But, as fate would have it, King Edward passed away before the hall could be completed and it was turned into a memorial for his 1876 visit to Cawnpore. And then World War I happened, and the hall was repurposed as a hospital for wounded British soldiers. Talk about a mood killer.
After the war, the hall became the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute and was finally completed in 1918.
It was used for cultural activities by European settlers and rented out for fancy Indian weddings.
Fast forward to 1947 and the hall is renamed Gandhi Bhawan and now houses a municipal library and the Kanpur Sangrahalaya Museum, established in 1999.
So, now you have the history of the place. Now it is mostly functioning as a library.
