Looking for an adventure in Maharashtra? Look no further than Javlya Fort, located just 43 km from Nashik. The fort is one half of the famous “Rola-Jola” twin forts, which sounds like the perfect name for a buddy cop movie.

Javlya Fort was strategically placed to overlook the trade route from Khandesh to Nashik, making it a hotspot for conquering armies throughout history. In fact, it’s seen more action than a Bollywood action movie! From Alavardikhan winning it for the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1636, to Shivaji Maharaj’s victory in 1670, to Dilerkhan’s defeat in 1671, this fort has seen it all. Even the Peshwas ruled over it for a long time until the British forces decided to come in and ruin everyone’s fun in 1818.

To get to Javlya Fort, take a guide from Babalpur and start your climb up the hill plateau to get a view of both the twin forts. Just remember, Ravalya fort is on the Dhondap side and Javalya fort is on the Markanda side – don’t mix them up! As you make your way up, you’ll see the remnants of old architecture, some of which are so overgrown with bushes that it’s like exploring a jungle gym.

But don’t worry, it’s all worth it once you reach the top. The view of the other forts, like Saptashringad and Koldher/Rajdhar/Indrai forts, is absolutely breathtaking. Just be sure to wear your hiking boots, because Captain Mackintosh destroyed the steps, bastion, and walls of the fort back in 1819, making the ascent of the fort impracticable. But hey, who needs steps when you’ve got a sense of adventure?
