Welcome to Ghodbunder Fort, a historical marvel situated in Ghodbunder Village, Thane, Maharashtra, India!

This fort has been through it all, from being built by the Portuguese to being occupied by the Maratha Empire and even becoming the East India Company’s district headquarters. But did you know that the fort got its name because it was where the Portuguese used to trade for ghode (horses) with the Arabs? Hence the name Ghodbunder: ghode (horses) & bunder (port). That’s right, this fort was once a hub for horse trading!

Today, Ghodbunder Fort is one of the major historical tourist attractions in Maharashtra, and for good reason. Even though it’s in ruins, the fort has managed to stand the test of time and natural upheavals. You can find the fort on one of the hills near Ullas river, and it’s located at a distance of 24.4 km from Thane railway station. To reach the fort, you can take buses like 700 or 702 which will take you to the Ghorbander junction from Thane.

As you explore the fort, you’ll come across several mansions and rooms that provide a glimpse into the magnificent Maratha rule. There’s even a Portuguese church built in the early 16th century AD, which although dilapidated, is a significant source of tourist attraction. And let’s not forget about the bastion on top, which provides a breathtaking view of suburban Mumbai.

But wait, there’s more! The halls with massive pillars and a door without locks and hinges that can be opened through sliding are one of the top two attractions of this fort. How cool is that? And did you know that Ghodbunder fort has always been a place of dispute among the Portuguese and Marathas? The fort was first constructed under the Portuguese, but was protected from being annexed by the Portuguese under the reign of Shivaji.

Throughout its history, Ghodbunder Fort has been through several annexations and constructions, but it has managed to retain its charm and allure. Today, it’s a popular spot for history buffs, trekking enthusiasts, and fort lovers alike. For photographers, it provides an awesome site to capture some incredible shots. And for trekking enthusiasts, it would be a wonderful experience as they can enjoy the beauty of trekking and witness the marvel that stands aloof even today.

So pack your bags, grab your camera, and come visit Ghodbunder Fort for a glimpse into the rich history and natural beauty of Maharashtra!
