Arnala Fort is 13 km north of Bassein in Maharashtra. The fort is Jaldurg or Janjire-Arnala. The Portuguese, who built the present fort, called the island Ilha das Vacas (Island of Cows).

The fort, also known as Jaldurg or Janjire-Arnala, was built by the Portuguese who, interestingly enough, called it Ilha das vacas, which means Island of Cows. We’re not sure if that means there were cows on the island or if the Portuguese were just really fond of cows, but either way, we’re excited to explore this historic site.

As we make our way to Arnala Island, we’ll be greeted by the peaceful serenity and tranquility of the area. Flanked by the Arabian Sea, the forlorn and desolate fort presents beauteous views of the surroundings- the ocean and the land. Sure, the fort may be a little worse for wear, but it’s full of history, having changed hands from the Portuguese, to the Marathas, to the British.

Once we arrive on the island, we’ll get to experience how a fishing village functions and ask the friendly locals to direct us to the fort. It’s only a two-minute walk from the ferry, so we won’t have to go far. As we enter the fort, we’ll be transported back in time to a world of stone gateways adorned with pictures of elephants and tigers, and temples dedicated to Lord Ambakeshwar, Goddess Bhavani, and Lord Shiva. And if that’s not enough, we’ll even get to see the sandals of Shrinityanand Maharaj!

But let’s not forget the real reason we’re here: the breathtaking panoramic views of the Arabian Sea! The best way to see them is to walk along the boundary wall, which offers a stunning view of the sea no matter where you are. We highly recommend watching the sunset from here. It’s a view that’s worth the trek, which, by the way, is an easy one that covers a distance of around 12 km.

As we explore the fort, we’ll come across storehouses, rooms, and a well, all of which are sure to catch our attention. And let’s not forget about the huge octagonal fresh water reservoir inside the fort that’s still filled with water even today. It’s a sight to watch!

But don’t worry, the fort’s not the only thing we’ll get to see. At a distance of around 550 metres from the main fort is the Martello Tower, also known as the Southern Watch Tower. While we can’t enter it, it’s still a fascinating structure to behold.

To get to Arnala Fort, we can take a short one-day trek or hop on a state-run bus from Virar, which is the nearest railway station to the fort. Alternatively, we can hire a cab or private taxi. So what are you waiting for? Let’s go on an adventure to Arnala Fort and experience the beauty and history of this fascinating site!
