Feroz Shah Kotla is in Firozabad in Delhi.
It was built by Feroz Shah Tughlaq. Now, the place around the fort is a vibrant metropolis.
At the heart of the Fort complex lies the breathtaking Ashokan Pillar, a polished sandstone column that dates back to the 3rd century BC. This awe-inspiring piece of history was relocated from Ambala to Delhi under orders from Feroz Shah Tughlaq, and now stands tall in the midst of the Fort’s crumbling remains.
The inscription on the pillar, written in Brahmi script, has been translated and tells a fascinating tale of the Delhi Sultanate’s architectural patronage.
The Feroz Shah Kotla is also home to a number of other fascinating sights, including the Jami Masjid (Mosque), a Baoli, and a beautiful garden complex. It’s easy to see why the Sultan chose this site to be the center of his new capital city.
In the days of the British Raj, the Kotla was a hub of cultural activity, playing host to classical music performances in the absence of proper auditoriums in the capital. Even today, the site remains a popular destination for history and culture buffs, with a number of notable productions having taken place here, including the landmark 1964 production of Dharamvir Bharati’s “Andha Yug.”
So, if you’re looking for a glimpse into Delhi’s rich history and culture, be sure to visit the Feroz Shah Kotla. Open from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM, entry is just INR 5 for Indians. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable opportunity to witness the past come to life!
