Chauler Fort – a small but mighty fortress located just 100 kilometers north of Nashik. Trust me, this hidden gem is worth the visit!
The nearest town to Chauler Fort is Satana, and once you arrive in Wadi Chauler village, you’ll find yourself at the foot of this impressive hill fort. Legend has it that King Gawali once ruled this fort, but it eventually fell into the hands of the British in 1818.
As you enter the fort, you’ll be greeted by a row of underground doors, which are a true masterpiece of architecture. Just pass through three gates and you’re in!
Inside the fort, you’ll find rock-cut caves, remains of fortifications, and even a palace that belonged to the Gond king Premnarain. Don’t miss the ranital (a barracks for prisoners), amphitheater, and the large tanks for storing rainwater.
If you’re feeling adventurous, take a walk along the fort’s loft, and you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Satmal and Selbari-Dolbari mountain ranges. And if you’re lucky enough to visit on the second day of Pola (Pithuri Amavasya), you can join in the annual fair that takes place here.
But wait, there’s more! On your way to Chauler Fort, you might stumble upon a horse-paga from the Gawli Raja period in Wadi Choulher village. And if you’re feeling thirsty, you can drink from the Moti tank water (it’s safe, we promise).
So, grab your backpack and head to Chauler Fort for a day of exploration and adventure. It’s a small fort with a big history, and we guarantee you’ll have a blast! Just don’t get lost in those underground doors…
