Birwadi fort is hill fortress located in the village of Birwadi in Roha taluka, Raigad district, Maharashtra.

As you approach the fort, it looks like a small hillock from a distance, but don’t let its size fool you. Birwadi Fort is part of a hill range that includes several other small forts like Ghosalgad, Talgad, Mangad Kurdugad, and Avachitgad of Rohya. So, if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can check them all out!

Now, let’s talk about the journey to the top. On the way to the fort, you’ll come across a spacious temple of Bhavani Mata with about 100 built steps to reach it. Don’t worry; the restoration work is going on, so you won’t have to worry about any crumbling steps. There’s even a cannon placed in the temple courtyard and a 6 feet statue of Lord Shiva at the back of the temple.

After you climb up from the temple, you’ll reach a detached tower, and from there, a path turns right, taking you around the entire fort. Along the way, you’ll find a rock-cut water tank known as ‘horse stitch,’ which is quite the spectacle. The fort’s peculiarity is the ramparts around it, and there’s even a neat entrance at the back of the fort that’s still fairly intact.

As you explore the fort, you’ll discover many ruins of an abandoned castle on Gadmatha and several water tanks. It’s important to note that Gadmatha is quite narrow, so it takes about half an hour to walk around.

Now, let’s talk about how to reach the fort. The base village of Birwadi is located next to Chanera, and the trail to reach the top starts near Birwadi’s newly constructed temple dedicated to Goddess Bhavani Mata. There are two routes that take you to the fort, but take the left one as it’s comparatively easier. However, be extra cautious on the rocky terrain, as it can become slippery during monsoons.

Once you reach the top, feast your eyes on the beautiful bird’s-eye view of the dense valley below and the lush greenery all around. And remember, if you have your vehicle, you can easily explore the fort in 1 to 2 hours.

So, what are you waiting for? Add Birwadi Fort to your travel bucket list, and don’t forget to bring your adventurous spirit and sense of humor.
