Bhushangad is a hill fort in the Khatav taluk of the Satara district of Maharashtra.

Perched 600 feet above the surrounding plains, this fort is the lone hill in the region of Khatav taluka of Satara district, making it a sight to enjoy.

But that’s not all – the fort is also home to the well-known temple of Goddess Harnai, so you can explore both man-made and natural wonders in one place.

But don’t worry about the climb – the villagers have made it easy for you with well-built steps leading up to the fort. And once you’re up there, you’ll be surrounded by a lush forest full of yellow-flowered trees that attract butterflies and small birds. You might even spot some funny-looking monkeys swinging from branch to branch.

The fort has been conserved so well that even a newly built arch welcomes you at the entrance. And speaking of the entrance, it faces eastward and is of the “Gomukhi” type design, which was probably used to confuse enemy soldiers. You’ll even see some porches built inside for gatekeepers – it’s like going back in time and experiencing the fort’s heyday for yourself.

As you explore further, you’ll come across a pond, a temple of Lord Shiva, and the temple of Goddess Harnai. Don’t forget to check out the lamp post and some stones painted with vermilion – they’re steeped in history and culture.

And if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can circumvent the entire fort alongside the fortification wall. But if you’re short on time, don’t worry – the whole fort can be visited in just one hour.

Built by the King of Devgiri Singhan II in the 13th century, Bhushangad fort has seen it all – from the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to the British rule in 1848. It even had a name change at one point, when Aurangzeb won the fort and named it “Islamtara”. But now, it’s a peaceful and picturesque spot that’s just waiting for you to come and explore.

So what are you waiting for? Grab your hiking boots and your sense of adventure and come visit Bhushangad fort!
