Bhimbetka rock shelters is a world heritage site near Bhopal.
It belongs to Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods, as well as the historic period. It exhibits the earliest traces of human life in India and evidence of Stone Age starting at the site in Acheulian times. Some paintings are known to be 10,000 years old…
It is near Hoshnangabad road on the way to Bhopal, which is some 45 kilometers away. There are over 750 rock shelters distributed over 10 sq.kms.
At least some of the shelters were inhabited more than 100,000 years ago.
Only 15-20 shelters are open to general public.
An interesting tidbit is some 550 million years old Dickinsonia fossils of extinct genus of basal animals has also been found at Bhimbetka.
