Welcome to the magical world of Hampi, where history, culture and architecture merge together to create a stunning spectacle! In the north eastern part of Hampi, close to the Tungabhadra River, lies the iconic Vittala Temple, also known as the Vitthala Temple. This ancient monument is famous for its incredible architecture and unmatched craftsmanship, making it one of the largest and most renowned structures in the area.

As you walk through the temple complex, you’ll come across several stone structures that will leave you in awe. From the charming stone chariot to the enchanting musical pillars, the Vittala Temple has it all! No wonder it’s the most visited monument in Hampi.

The temple dates back to the 15th century, and it was built during the reign of King Devaraya II, one of the rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire. Legend has it that the temple was built for Lord Vishnu in his Vitthala form, but he found it too grand for his use and decided to stay in his own humble home.

The Vittala Temple is an exemplary specimen of Dravidian architecture, with typical south Indian temple features. The carvings and architecture are so elaborate and artistic that you’ll be left wondering how they achieved such mastery! The temple complex has many halls, shrines and pavilions, each one made of stone and each one a beauty in itself.

The Maha Mantapa or main hall is a structure of immense beauty and is situated on a highly ornate base. The base is decorated with carvings of warriors, horses, swans and several other ornamental designs. There are forty pillars lining the facade of the temple, each one ten feet high. The central part of the Maha Mantapa has sixteen intricately decorated pillars having beautiful sculptures of Narasimha and Yali.

Now, if you’re a music lover, then the Ranga Mantapa is the place for you! This large mantapa is renowned for its 56 musical pillars, also known as SAREGAMA pillars. You’ll be delighted to hear the musical notes emitted by them, and you might just end up dancing to their tune!

And last but not least, we have the famous Stone Chariot, which is considered to be the most stunning architecture of the Vijayanagara kingdom. This richly sculpted chariot is a shrine that has been designed in the shape of an ornamental chariot, dedicated to Garuda, the carrier of Lord Vishnu. It’s no wonder that it’s the most photographed monument in Hampi!

So, what are you waiting for? Come and explore the grandeur of the Vittala Temple in Hampi, and witness the magic of history, culture and architecture come alive!
