Vellore Fort is a 16th century fort near the National Highway (NH4) between Chennai and Bangalore. It was once an important fort of Vijayanagar empire and later changed to various hands before British and Independent India. Now, a part of the complex is served as sub jail.
The fort also has Jalakanteswara temple and St. John Church and a mosque. There is also a small archaeology museum inside the fort complex.
The fort is a large complex spread across 133 acres with massive fortifications with large granite walls and moats.
