Thotlakonda Buddhist Complex is situated on a hill near Bheemunipatnam about 15 kilometres from Vizag. It is not a functioning monastery.
The hill provides a sea view point and brilliant view of green valley below.
The hill is about 128 metres above sea level and was once an important Buddhist centre.
Some archaeological explorations and discovery of Satavahana /Roman silver coins indicate activity on this place from 2nd century AD and indicate trade with Europe.
The monastery complex was discovered by Indian navy during an aerial survey.
The place provides hints about the architecture and building designs of those period. Here, Buddha was worshipped through signs like padukas than his image or sculpture.
