Sidi Saiyyed Mosque is one of the most stunning mosques in Ahmedabad!

Built back in 1573, this religious landmark is a perfect blend of history and architectural grandeur. And the cherry on the top? The ornate latticework, called Jalis, which are a paradise for both photographers and history buffs.

Legend has it that this fantastic mosque was completed in the last year of the Gujarat Sultanate’s reign. Unfortunately, it had to be abandoned midway when the Mughals invaded Gujarat, leaving one central window arch walled with stone instead of another intricately carved jali.

The craftsmen who created the ten semicircular tympani windows adorned with elegant tracery in the form of tree stems and branches were no less than superheroes.

Forty-five of them had to work day and night to finish these stunning jalis on time.

Interestingly, the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque serves as a memory of the time when Gujarat prospered under Muslim rule. Sidi Saiyyed, the man behind this religious landmark, was not just a nobleman but also a helping hand to the poor. And hey, did you know that the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, took inspiration from the Sidi Saiyyed Jali for its logo? Impressive, right?

The mosque is open to visitors all year round, but we suggest visiting between November and February to beat the heat. And, oh, visitors are advised not to visit the mosque on Fridays, the day of mass prayer, due to the crowds. Also, don’t forget to leave your footwear before entering the main mosque – it’s a sign of respect.

In conclusion, the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque is a must-visit if you’re in Ahmedabad. Not only is it a beautiful representation of Indo-Islamic architecture, but it’s also a symbol of the city’s rich history and culture. So, what are you waiting for? Put on your walking shoes, grab your camera, and head on over to this stunning landmark!
